Richard Douglas "Dick" Fosbury (born March 6, 1947) is one of the most influential athletes in the history of track and field. He revolutionized the high jumpevent, inventing a unique "back-first" technique, now known as the Fosbury Flop, adopted by almost all high jumpers today. His method was to sprint diagonally towards the bar, then curve and leap backwards over the bar.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh Breaks High Jump World Record. With a jump of 2.10m (6-10.75) at the Wanda Diamond League Meet in Paris in July, 2024, Yaroslav Mahuchikh, age 22, of Ukraine breaks the 37 year-old record of 2.09m held by Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria. Although Mahuchikh had won the event at 2.03m, she passed at 2.05m, choosing instead to try to set a new personal record at 2.07m. After clearing 2.07m on her second attempt, she holds up both hands open to signal her coach she is going to try 2.10m and then clears the bar on her first attempt.
